Update: Bloom Student in 'Critical but Stable' Condition After Hit-and-Run

The 17-year-old's mother is hoping the driver responsible will come forward.

Updated at 9:20 a.m. on March 20, 2012 to include Matthew Brown's newly reported condition.

A senior is now in critical-but-stable condition at Christ Hospital after he was hit by an SUV Saturday, according to family members.

Matthew Brown III, a 17-year-old ROTC participant, was walking near the intersection of 14th Street and Wentworth Avenue when a Ford Explorer heading east struck him and fled the scene, according to police.

Matthew's mother, Sanetta Lee-Brown, was at Christ Hospital in Oak Lawn Monday, awaiting updates on the status of her son.

"Right now we’re doing as well as can be expected," Sanetta said. "We just want the support of his friends and family as he tries to recover."

Thankful for the support from others, Sanetta had a different message for the driver responsible for injuring her son.

"We want the person that did this to just turn themselves in," Sanetta said. "I don’t know if they don’t have a license or insurance, but I wish they would."

Because of Matthew's 220-pound frame, Sanetta discounted any possibility the driver was unaware that he or she hit her son.

Matthew's aunt Stephanie Fleming said she is also eager to find out who was at fault, and had nothing but kind words to say when thinking about her injured nephew.

"He comes from a good family and he is a good kid," Fleming said. "I know a lot of people say that, but I can say it with confidence."

Police are looking for an "early 2000s" model brown or burgundy Ford Explorer with front-end damage. Anyone with additional information is encouraged to contact the at 708-756-6421.
