Bloom Trail Junior ROTC Member Chosen for Select Summer Camp

Bloom Trail High School junior Josh Witt, a member of the school's Navy Junior ROTC program, recently was selected to take part in the prestigious STEM Camp at Embry Aeronautical University in Pensacola, Fla., June 16-22.

Witt was one of 84,000 applicants—and only 200 selected for the weeklong program. 

Witt said it was an honor just being selected and that he was looking forward to the trip and hopes to learn as much as possible during the trip.

“We're going to be going to the Kennedy Space Station, doing flight simulators and just aeronautical stuff,” he said. “I believe there's robotics, too.”

To be selected, Witt needed to show his academic prowess with excellent grades—he currently boasts a 4.1 GPA at Bloom Trail. He also attended the ROTC's Naval Service Training Command and was nominated by his commander, Timothy W. Crawford, for acceptance into the program.

Witt's mother Tracy is brimming with excitement over her son's accomplishment. 

“It's a great opportunity for him, I'm really excited,” she said. “He can always accomplish what he puts his mind to and he has wanted to excel in the ROTC since he was little, this just proves he can do it.”

Following his weeklong educational trip and his senior year, Witt said he hopes to enroll in the Naval Academy and pursue a career in the Navy.

“I've always wanted to go into the military and see the world,” he said. “The Navy will allow me to do that and serve my country."
