Census Data Breaks Down Number of Heights Home Owners and Renters

The 2010 Census data is piling up, and Patch will be giving you the numbers for your community.

How many Chicago Heights homes are owned? How many owners live on their property? How many rent it out? 

Those numbers have been released by the U.S. Census Bureau in the 2010 Census for several states, including Illinois. These uber-detailed counts show information on age, sex, households, families, race and more. The Bureau released data about these basic categories before, but now the information is so detailed we can isolate a block inside of a city.

Every week, we'll take a bit of information from the Census data to examine the populations of Chicago Heights, Olympia Fields and South Chicago Heights. Here are a few facts that relate to the Heights:

  • Housing Units: We have 11,060 housing units in Chicago Heights. Most of them are owned, but a little more than 13 percent are vacant. 
  • Renters vs. Owners: 5,888 Heights housing units are occupied by the owner, while 3,699 are renter occupied. 
  • Vacant Units: Of the 1,473 vacant housing units in Chicago Heights more than 48 percent are not for rent, for sale or for seasonal use.
  • Race Breakdown: More than 85 percent of rented-occupied units in Chicago Heights are occupied by African-Americans, Latinos or Hispanics. The same group makes up about 53 percent of owner-occupied housing units.
