Chicago Heights Park Will Be for the Dogs If Board Approves

The Park District Board of Commissioners will vote on whether to pay for new additions to Guy Petrarca Park at their April 23 meeting.

A Chicago Heights park could get a makeover soon, if Second Ward Commissioner Fernando Desiderio gets his way.

Inspired by a visit to Homewood-Flossmoor Park District's , Desiderio wants to have changed into a dog park.Β

"It seems perfect for the change,"Β Desiderio said. "People from the north side already bring their dogs here."

Desiderio's idea involvesΒ adding fences, clean-up stations, benches and obstacles for the dogs, but needs board approval before he can request bids from contractors to have the new additions built at the park.Β

The board will discuss and vote on the matter at the next meeting and Desiderio is calling for support from the community.

β€œI urge people to go, to let their park commissioner know to vote for it.” Desiderio said. β€œEven if you don’t have a dog, it’s aesthetic value. Anyone can come down here, walk their dog and sit on the benches.”

The park, located on 22nd Street, currently consists of a gazebo and a walking path.

Desiderio said he has gotten support from First Ward Commissioner Belinda Mosby and Seventh Ward Commissioner Kenny Ochoa, as well as Seventh Ward Ald. Sylvia Torres and Second Ward Ald. Sonia Perez.

The board meeting will be at the at 7 p.m. on Monday, April 23.Β
