Matteson Breaks Ground At South Suburban Humane Society Ceremony

The village will soon be home to the new 26,000 square-foot South Suburban Humane Society.

MATTESON, IL β€” The Village of Matteson had a ground breaking ceremony with elected officials both from the village and Cook County, celebrating the future home of the South Suburban Humane Society in the village. The ceremony took place earlier this week.

The facility will be used to find homes and provide resources for pets in suburban Chicago and Northwest Indiana, as the society has been doing for 50 years, according to the village. The new development will be located on Route 30 and Central, just west of the Auto Mall, according to the village.

"We are thrilled that our town has been chosen to house such a special endeavor. Or residents place a special value with our pets and animals, which makes today's announcement a perfect match," Village President Sheila Y. Chalmers-Currin said. "We are honored for the association and that Matteson is the new home for the ultimate protector of animals.

The village president thanked the board of trustees and other officials, such as Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle. Preckwinkle also gave a speech, stating

"Over the past few decades the way shelters care for pets has evolved. But many of their facilities have not. Some were built without multiple species in mind," Preckwinkle said. "While the South Suburban Humane Society makes the most of the resources they currently have, they've outgrown their current facility. They knew they had the need for a larger and more modern shelter that meets the needs of the community today and will go into the future."

Preckwinkle said the society was awarded 6 million dollars to help build a new facility to meet the needs of Cook County's Southland.

The village said the Humane Society will be a 26,000 square-foot facility. The village did not indicate when the project is projected to be completed. View the ground breaking ceremony and speeches from officials, below.
