Mayor Gonzalez to Announce New Police Chief in Coming Weeks

The mayor said this process will be shorter than the one used to select a new fire chief earlier this year.

With Chief Michael Camilli , Mayor David Gonzalez has a big decision to make.

The mayor will appoint a replacement for Camilli, and the will be tasked with approving or rejecting that replacement.

When , it took several months for his replacement, , with an intense application and interview process leading up to the decision.

Gonzalez said the process for selecting the new police chief won't be quite so drawn out. Β 

β€œWith the fire chief, I wasn’t too much up to speed on the qualifications that we’re needed, but within the police department, I think we pretty much have a good idea of who we’ll be able to promote," Gonzalez said. "There’s no reason to do the interviews and the dog and pony show if we already know."

Gonzalez said he expects to make the recommendation within the next 30 days. Camilli did not say who he thinks will be his successor.

β€œWe have a lot of good men," Camilli said. "I’ve mentored a lot of good administrators here. I’m sure the mayor is going to select a person that is going to do a great job, and I’m almost 100 percent positive that the city council will support that appointment.”
