Starving Their Baby to Death Gets Young Couple 5 Years in Prison

Markisha Jones and Gene Edwards, a young couple in their 20s, had twin baby girls two years ago. When police and paramedics found them, at just 7 months of age, they were near death. One recovered, but the other died on a dining room table of starvation and malnutrition. They lived in a Barrington apartment, where their 23-year-old dad spent his days playing video games. They hadn’t taken their babies to the doctor, and they’d let their food stamps lapse. Instead of baby formula, they fed the infants cereal and water. A prosecutor attributed the baby’s death to “laziness.”

No Bail for Chicago Cop Charged in ‘Graphic, Violent, Chilling’ Murder

Cook County State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez brought first-degree murder charges Tuesday against Chicago Police Officer Jason Van Dyke, who shot 17-year-old Laquan McDonald 16 times as on a South Side street in October 2014. The shooting was recorded on a police dashboard camera. “It is everything that it has been described to be by the news accounts. It is graphic, it is violent, it is chilling,” Alvarez said. “I have absolutely no doubt that this video will tear at the hearts of all Chicagoans.” The video is to be released for public viewing on Wednesday. Van Dyke appeared before a judge Tuesday and was held without bail. Alvarez described what the recording depicts and why she brought charges in a case reminiscent of police shootings in Ferguson and Baltimore that led to riots in the streets.
