Fight Between Co-Workers Leads To Shooting At Shopping Center: Police

VERNON HILLS, IL — A fight between co-workers fueled an argument, which lead to a shooting, at a shopping center in Vernon Hills Thursday night, police said.

Jhonattan Garcia-Nava, 36, remained jailed Friday morning in connection with the shooting that happened at about 6:48 p.m. in the 700 block of North Milwaukee Avenue near the Hawthorn Hills Square Shopping Center, police said. He is charged with attempted first-degree murder, and additional charges are likely.

The man injured in the shooting sustained multiple gunshot wounds and is listed in critical condition, police said Friday.

The shooting was the result of an argument between co-workers at an area business, according to a news release from the Vernon Hills Police Department. The Hawthorn Hills Square Shopping Center closed for several hours as police investigated the shooting and has since reopened.

Garcia-Nava was taken into custody at about 1 a.m. at a home in Waukegan by members of the Northern Illinois Police Alarm System’s Emergency Services Team. Multiple firearms were recovered during this operation, police said.

Garcia-Nava will remain in custody as he awaits his first court appearance.
