A man who falsely reported an active shooter prompted a large police response Friday evening in Richmond that led to a standoff that injured three officers.

The incident began around 5:30 p.m. Friday in the 10300 block of West Street in Richmond.

A criminal complaint filed in McHenry County Circuit Court alleges Paul W. Gunn, 39, called 911 to report there was a subject actively shooting at people from his residence in the 10300 block of West Street in Richmond.

The complaint said that Gunn knew there was no reasonable ground for believing that was occurring.

An approximately 40-minute standoff ensued between police and Gunn, who refused to exit the residence.

At one point, Gunn told the officers, “Are you ready to die? I’m ready to die. Come inside. I have a lot of guns,” according to the complaint.

Officers eventually moved in and tried to arrest the man but he resisted arrest, the complaint said.

Three officers suffered minor injuries to their hands during a struggle to arrest Gunn, the complaint said.

A judge set Gunn’s bond at $50,000. He would need to post $5,000 in order to be released from the McHenry County Jail.

Gunn is scheduled to appear in court again on Wednesday.
