Burglary Crew Steals Money, Guns From Cars In Cary

Also, a vehicle was stolen during the early Sunday incidents.

CARY, IL — An investigation is underway after at least five thieves stole money, credit cards and guns from vehicles in Cary early on Sunday. A vehicle, which was found abandoned later, also was stolen, authorities said.

At least ten vehicle burglaries have been reported, according to a news release from the Cary Police Department. And police are still looking for more information regarding the burglaries as they look to take the suspects into custody.

The Cary Police Department was first alerted to the burglaries at about 5:30 a.m. Sunday when a resident living in the 300 block of Oriole Trail first called to report that an image captured on their home security camera showed a person trying to open the doors to their vehicle at about 40 minutes earlier, according to a news release.

Over the next couple hours, officers learned of multiple other burglaries that happened in the area by First Street on the east to Silver Lake Road on the west and from Three Oaks Road to the north and Park Avenue to the south.

According to authorities, items stolen include purses, money, debit and credit cards, and in one instance, two handguns.

In most cases where items were stolen, the vehicle was left unlocked. However, in one instance the suspect used a flashlight to brighten the inside of the vehicle and after seeing an item of value, broke the vehicle windows with an unknown object to get inside.

Later in the morning, a police department in a nearby town called to a report an abandoned vehicle on the side of the roadway in their jurisdiction. The vehicle was traced back to a Cary resident, who did not know their vehicle had been stolen earlier in the morning.

The vehicle was stolen during the same general time frame of the burglary incidents, and was believed to have been one of three different vehicles used by the thieves, police said. At least two of the vehicles had been stolen, according to authorities.

The thieves attempted to use a stolen debit card at a gas station in Chicago later in the morning, police said.

Authorities believe at least five people were a part of the burglary crew. They say the people who entered, or attempted to enter the vehicles, were young adults or juvenile Black males. Several suspects had their faces covered though one of the suspects did not.

Anyone who witnesses any suspicious activity is asked to call 911.

Anyone with information, including but not limited to doorbell or security video footage in the area of the incidents, is asked to call the Cary Police Department investigations section at 847-639-2341.
