Cary Man Facing Firearm Charges After Brief Standoff: Police

Cary police were called to an E. Main Street address for reports of a man shooting a gun outside the property.

CARY, IL — Cary Police Department officers were called to the 0-100 block of E. Main Street at 11:30 p.m. Monday regarding a man shooting a gun outside the property at the address, according to a news release from the police department. Police officers got to the address and found a spent shell casing outside, the news release said. After a short standoff, 48-year-old Steven J. Burns, from Cary, was arrested, and through further investigation was identified as the suspected shooter, according to police.

Authorities got a search warrant and searched the home, where they found two guns and miscellaneous ammunition, according to the news release.

During the investigation it was learned that Burns didn't have a valid Firearm Owner’s Identification Card (FOID). He faces the following charges:

  • Felony reckless discharge of a firearm: 1 count
  • Misdemeanor reckless conduct: 1 count
  • Misdemeanor possession of ammunition without a valid FOID Card: 2 counts
  • Misdemeanor possession of a firearm without a valid FOID Card: 2 counts

Burns was taken to the McHenry County Jail to wait for a bond hearing, according to the news release.
