Crystal Lake Fire Rescue Alerts Residents To Smoke Alarm Recall
The fire rescue department said the CPSC recently recalled 180,000 of this type of smoke alarm. Here's why.
CRYSTAL LAKE, IL — The Crystal Lake Fire Rescue Department is alerting the public to a recent recall by the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission involving smoke detectors. According to the fire rescue department, the CPSC announced on July 10 the recall of 180,000 Universal Security Instruments Smoke Alarms due to a misaligned internal switch.
"The smoke alarms can have a misaligned internal switch, causing the alarms to not activate properly, posing a risk of failure to alert consumers of a fire," according to the CPSC, the fire rescue department said.
According to fire crews, the CPSC recommends anyone with the smoke alarms replaces them as soon as possible. The alarms are described as those sold for about $20 online through specialty wholesalers and others between July 2015 and December 2016. So far, the company has received more than 130 reports of the alarms failing to activate properly during installation, according to the CPSC.
