Storage Unit Fire Being Investigated In McHenry Township

McHenry Township fire crews found smoke coming from a one-story storage unit building on Route 31, and its 60 units, while one was on fire.

MCHENRY TOWNSHIP, IL — McHenry County Sheriff’s office is investigating after the McHenry Township Fire Protection District was called to a reported building fire at 1:45 p.m. Thursday in the 4400 block of Richmond Road (Route 31) in unincorporated McHenry. MTFPD got to the address and found smoke coming from a one-story storage unit building and its 60 units, according to a news release from MTFPD, adding that one of the units was on fire.

According to the news release, one person was hurt from trying to put the fire out and was checked out by paramedics, but declined to be taken to the hospital and was then released.

MTFPD crews and additional help from Wonder Lake and Richmond fire protection districts worked aggressively to put out the flames, opening up every storage unit to check whether the flames spread, according to the news release. The fire was extinguished within 15 minutes, as the main fire was held in the one unit, though some minor flames spread to the units on both sides, MTFPD added.

There was smoke damage to several other units, the news release said. A damage estimate isn't yet available, according to the news release.

Fox Lake and Spring Grove fire protection districts provided coverage at MTFPD stations while crews were at the fire site, according to the news release.
