Darien To Make Money From Advertising On Sign

Aldermen decided to open up the sign for businesses.

DARIEN, IL – Darien is set to make money from an electronic marquee sign at one of the city's busiest intersections.

On Monday, the City Council enacted a policy for the sign at the southwest corner of Cass Avenue and Plainfield Road.

In 2023, the council approved the sign and landscaping at the corner, where an office building sits.

Since then, Darien has posted messages on the sign about urgent matters, city events and meetings, and seasonal information. At no cost, the city also allows advertising from tenants in the nearby office building and local nonprofits.

Under the new policy, the city is opening up advertising to the business community.

The city controls the programming and animation, which it outsources to a company.

The policy bars advertising for such things as alcohol, tobacco and marijuana.
