Darien Park District Lightning Detection System Now Active

The following is an announcement from the Darien Park District:

The Darien Park District's lighting detection system is now active at Westwood Park/Darien Community Center and Darien Community Park.
The system tracks lightning from 20 miles away and activates a signal when lightning is within 5 miles of the parks. The signal consists of one fifteen-second horn blast as well as a strobe flash at the alarm station (only Darien Community Park.)

The alarm stations are located on the southeast corner of the Community Center and on top of the porta-potty shelter on the west side of Community Park. Once the signal is activated, all activities must be suspended and all patrons should seek shelter.

Once the system determines the conditions are safe, there will be an "all clear" signal, which consists of three short horn blasts and the strobe light will shut off. Keep in mind that weather conditions can change rapidly and that this system will not provide absolute protection.
