The new owner promised a "cozy atmosphere" with couches and a fireplace.
DARIEN, IL – A deli is replacing the longtime Uncle Mao's Chinese Restaurant in the Darien Plaza, officials said this week.
Tony and Tina's Deli is set to open at 8133 S. Cass Ave. in the shopping center that includes Q Bar.
On Monday, the Darien City Council approved a beer and wine license for the new restaurant. An opening date was not given.

During the meeting, owner Tony Buzinski said his restaurant would sell subs and paninis. He also said his wife may offer charcuterie boards, depending on local interest.
"It's going to be more of a cozy atmosphere," Buzinski told aldermen. "We plan on putting in at least a couple of couches and a fireplace."

In a letter to the city, Buzinski described the deli as "high-end." He aims for the restaurant to be "an integral part of the community."
At the meeting, Mayor Joseph Marchese explained the Uncle Mao owner's reason for closing.
"He's retiring. He's not being kicked out," the mayor said.
