Darien's 'Go-To Kind Of Guy' Honored

He has had perfect Lions attendance for 22 years. His involvement includes church, civic and athletic groups.

DARIEN, IL – John Galan was named Darien's Citizen of the Year at this week's City Council meeting.

Galan and his wife, Helen Galan, have been Darien residents for more than four decades.

He is most known for his involvement in the Darien Lions Club, to which he has belonged for 30 years. He has served as its president, among other roles.

For 22 years, Galan has had perfect attendance at Lions meetings.

"His service to the club is an outgrowth of his dedication to the Darien Community and his belief that one needs to show appreciation for his/her community through service," according to his nomination letter.

Galan's community involvement includes church, civic and athletic groups.

"Through all these accolades, John is best identified as the person who is always working in the background in order to get the job done," the letter said. "A quote from one of the nominators noted he was a 'bonus citizen' and a 'go-to kind of guy.'"

Galan likes to spend his free time on his Harley-Davidson motorcycle. He can be seen on his bike in parades in Darien and other towns.

He also enjoys golfing, brewing beer, fishing and cooking.

He was selected by Darien's Citizen of the Year Committee.

A dinner in his honor is planned for Feb. 28.
