Hinsdale South Student Jailed For Gun At School: Officials
The 16-year-old boy faces felony weapons charges, authorities said.

DARIEN, IL – A 16-year-old Hinsdale South High School student who brought a loaded gun to school has been ordered detained until his next court appearance, prosecutors said Friday.
The Willowbrook boy was arrested on felony charges of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon in public and unlawful possession of a firearm under 18.
Late Thursday morning, the boy was discovered with a 9mm Taurus GX-4 handgun during a routine visit to the dean's office, authorities said. He was taken to the Darien police station for questioning.

“There is absolutely no reason whatsoever for a sixteen-year-old boy to be in possession of a loaded firearm, particularly at a school, as alleged in this case,” DuPage County State's Attorney Robert Berlin said in a statement. "My office takes any sign of potential violence involving a school very seriously."
After the gun was found, the school was temporarily put on a "hold in place" order, meaning students stayed in class without changing rooms.

The school plans to use its weapons detection system until at least the Thanksgiving break.
The student's next court hearing is Dec. 2.
