A For-Profit Solicitor? Darien Says Not Now

The city currently has zero for-profit businesses with solicitor permits.

DARIEN, IL – A solicitor dropping by your house today to make a pitch for a for-profit business would be violating a Darien ordinance, the city said Thursday.

The city said it currently has zero for-profit organizations with valid solicitor permits.

Under Darien's rules, for-profit businesses must get a permit, which includes an application for each solicitor they employ. Then background checks are done.

Upon approval and receipt of a fee, a 30-day permit is issued, the city said.

By contrast, charities only need to provide a letter indicating the dates of solicitation and, if appropriate, the intersections where volunteers will be posted, according to the city.
