Powerful Storm Blows Roof Off Apartment Building in DuPage County
Residents in a Willowbrook subdivision were forced to evacuate Tuesday. Meanwhile, all takeoffs at Midway stopped until early evening.

An apartment building in the 16W500 block of Honeysuckle Rose Lane was evacuated Tuesday afternoon after a sudden powerful storm squall blew off the rooftop.
DuPage County sheriff's deputies responded around 2:40 p.m. to a call from The Hinsdale Lake Terrace Apartments located in unincorporated Willowbrook. At that time, a heavy rainstorm blew through the western suburbs. Reports from the sheriff's department indicated there were no known injuries in the roof incident, despite wind gusts of up to 50 miles per hour and pea-sized hail overhead.

Storms hadn't yet finished around early evening -- Lightning, thunder, wind and rain continued to sweep through the suburbs.
Although the Chicago Department of Aviation said only minor flight delays were plaguing O'Hare and Midway airports' travelers, all takeoffs at Midway Airport weresuspended between 4:30 and 5:30 p.m.

Additionally, several large trees reportedly were uprooted in the Oak Park and Forest Park areas. City of Chicago officials evacuated North Avenue Beach as the storm passed through.
