IL Man Desecrated, Stole Veteran's Funeral Flag: Report

The flag was valued at over $1,000 and was donated by a military family for display Memorial Day weekend, according to the Herald & Review.

DECATUR, IL — A Decatur man is charged with desecration and theft after he was caught attempting to steal a U.S. flag previously used to honor a veteran’s casket, according to the Herald & Review.

The flag, valued at over $1,000, was donated by a military family to be displayed Memorial Day weekend at Graceland Cemetery, the Herald & Review reported, but security staff found the man about 2 a.m. May 28, and discovered he had removed the flag from the ground. The man dropped the flag and trampled it while fleeing, according to the Herald & Review.

There have been flag thefts at the cemetery before, according to the Herald & Review, which reported military branch flags and an American flag were stolen in mid-May.
