Early Voting Brisk in Deerfield

Turnout is heavy on first morning.

Early voting began at 9 a.m. today in Deerfield and the turnout was higher than usual for a municipal off year election despite local schools being closed for spring break, according to officials at the local early voting center.

After 90 minutes of voting, 37 people had already cast ballots on the second floor of the West Deerfield Township office which handles early voting needs for people living in the Township outside of Highland Park and Lake Forest.

“It’s much heavier than it normally is for this kind of election,” poll worker John Peters of Highland Park said. Early voting will continue from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturdays through April 6.

Another official at the polling place does not expect spring break to make a difference because of voter interest in the $89 million referendum to renovate Deerfield and Highland Park High Schools.

“I expect it to be busier because of the school referendum,” election official John Peters of Waukegan said.

In addition to the referendum, voters will elect members of the , the Township High School District 113 Board of Education and officials of the Township in the local contested races.
