Readers Want Bulls To Stay

When the Chicago Bulls announced they intended to sell Deerfield’s Sherry L. Berto Center where the team trains and move the practice facility to Chicago, Patch readers reacted unhappily to the news they perceived as another blow to the Village.

Not everyone was opposed to the move. Of the 60 readers who responded to an unscientific survey, 36 want the team to remain in the Village, 10 are not opposed to the departure and 14 indicated it does not matter to them.

As one reader, Wang, put it, “Tough first half of 2012 - first Woodfire Chicken and now the Bulls. What's next for Deerfield,” Wang wrote.

The Bulls made it clear when they issued a news release about the departure a major reason for the change was a strong lobbying effort by Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel. “Mayor Emanuel put together a pitch and brought a business to Chicago. A flagship type business. That's what happened. Deerfield lost, Chicago won,” RB wrote. 

While a number of readers were critical of the loss, another person, Jerpaul, was an advocate of the Village and its lifestyle.

“The players don't want to leave, most of them live on the North Shore,” Jerpaul wrote. “The mayor and board all do a great job, the schools are top notch. (The) Botanic Garden has more beauty each time I visit. Bottom line is Bulls lose.”
