Moylan Backs Bogusz for Mayor

A “surprise event chairperson” at Matt Bogusz’s fundraiser for his mayoral campaign turned out to be Mayor of Des Plaines and state representative-elect Marty Moylan. The event took place at , on Dec. 5.

In an interview with Patch, Moylan said he told Bogusz’s supporters that he endorsed him because he wanted the policies established during his administration to continue.

“Naturally, I love the City of Des Plaines, and, when I made the decision to run, and then I won, I was concerned about how I would leave, who would I leave to continue to carry on the positive programs that we have done in the last four years,” Moylan said. “And there was a clear choice that I will endorse Matt Bogusz to continue this legacy of good, fiscal, sound government.”

Moylan said the reason endorsed Bogusz was, working with him as mayor, he showed he could make those tough decisions.

“Look at his work on the budget,” Moylan said.

Moylan said the city made some unpopular cuts during his administration, and Bogusz was part of that effort.

“We had to control the size of our government, eliminate positions over the years,” Moylan said. “We did 68 positions in three years; that’s a lot.”

Bogusz said over the past four years the city had changed directions.

“I’m proud of the work we’ve done over the last four years, specifically on our city’s budget, retiring debt, increasing savings and maintaining three years of property tax levy, three years at a zero percent tax levy,” Bogusz said. “I have worked tirelessly as chairman of finance against those three goals, and the mayor has stood by me along the way.”

Also running for Mayor of Des Plaines in the consolidated election are Sixth Ward Alderman Mark Walsten and former Des Plaines mayor Tony Arredia.

In November Moylan said he would resign his role as mayor sometime in December, making way for an interim mayor to serve until the election in April. The next city council meeting is Dec. 17.
