The Supreme Court ruled on Wednesday that the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) is unconstitutional.Β
What does this mean? For those whoΒ live in a state that has approved same-sex marriage, the federal government must now recognize that.Β Same-sex marriageΒ is legally recognized in 13 statesΒ as ofΒ June 2013βCalifornia, Connecticut, Delaware, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New hampshire, New York, Rhode Island, Vermont and Washington, according to Reuters.
Before today, same-sex couples married in a state that recognized same-sex marriage were barred from receiving theΒ same federal benefits other married couples receive, according to Huffington Post.Β
Here in Illinois, an effort to approve same-sex marriage in Illinois fell short earlier this month, according toΒ CBS News.
The Supreme Court was strongly divided on the issue, as the measure passed with a 5-4 vote. Much of the nation is divided as well.Β
