Thursday Blotter: Traffic Stops Lead to Possession of Cannabis Charges, More

No Proof of Insurance, Possession of Cannabis, Suspended Driver’s License

Police conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle due to an active warrant on the registered owner in the 1100 block of E. Touhy Avenue at 8:28 p.m. on March 24. According to the report, the driver, Edgar Rebolldo Armenta, of Skokie, told police his driver’s license was suspended. While speaking with Armenta, according to the report, the officer detected the strong odor of burnt cannabis coming from inside the vehicle.

Police learned from speaking with Armenta, according to the report, that the female passenger was the registered owner of the vehicle.

Armenta told police, according to the report, he had a partially smoked joint in an open pack of cigarettes in the center console of the car. Police recovered the cigarette pack with cannabis in it.

Police also found out over the radio that Armenta had an active warrant, and he was transported to the Des Plaines Police Department, where he was issued citations for possession of cannabis, driving on a suspended driver’s license and no proof of insurance. He was given a court date of April 12 at Skokie courthouse.

While conducting a traffic stop on a vehicle for loud exhaust in the 1200 block of Cora Street at 8:28 p.m. on March 26, police detected the strong odor of burnt cannabis coming from the car. According to the report, when the responding officer asked the driver, later identified as Casey A. Mieszala, of Chicago, if there was any cannabis in the vehicle, Mieszala said, according to the report, “Yes, there is a cigar with weed in it.”

Police recovered a silver metal grinder with a green leafy substance in it, a cigar with a green leafy substance and a glass pipe with burnt cannabis, in the center compartment of the car between the driver and passenger seats. A field test was conducted and came up positive for the probable presence of cannabis.

Mieszala was charged with loud exhaust, possession of cannabis and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was given a court date of April 26 at Skokie courthouse.

Criminal Damage to Vehicle

Police were dispatched for a vandalism report in the 1200 block of Perry Street at 10:09 a.m. on March 26. According to the report, a sedan was discovered with three flat tires. An unknown offender damaged the vehicle sometime between 9 p.m. on March 25 and 10 a.m. on March 26. Property loss was estimated at $600.

Theft

Police responded to a theft report in the 1600 block of Oakwood Avenue at 9:27 p.m. on March 26. According to the report, sometime between 5:30 p.m. and 9:25 p.m., an unknown offender stole a red and black, 20-inch men’s Mongoose mountain bike from the west side of a building. Property loss was estimated at $100.
