VFW Set to Expand at New Location

The Des Plaines post moved to Oakton Place, a retirement community.

Mike Lake, adjutant of the VFW, said the space was perhaps 10 times larger than the space they rented at the American Legion. The organization will also benefit because they will no longer pay to rent a storage facility, he said.

Lake said members were looking forward to expanding their organization with new programs, and working with residents at the retirement community, some of whom are veterans. He said the partnership with Oakton Place would be good for the post.

One idea is a program to recognize women who were part of the war effort.

“I don’t think that they ever got the recognition that they deserve, and there’s a lot of them at Oakton,” Lake said. “So we’re working on a program to celebrate them.”

The VFW’s first official meeting will be held Nov. 3. The organization currently has approximately 250 members, about 30 of which attend meetings.
