Walk to School Day 2016: Des Plaines School Participates

A Des Plaines school joins more than 4,000 other schools around the world in taking a walk on Wednesday.

DES PLAINES, IL — A school in Des Plaines is among the more than 4,000 around the world participating in International Walk to School Day on Wednesday.

Students from Central School will walk to school Wednesday.

Walk to School Day was started by the Partnership for a Walkable America in 1997. The first event, National Walk Our Children to School Day, was in Chicago.

“In the USA and Canada, International Walk to School Day galvanizes visibility for walking and bicycling to school,” the organization says on its website. “Over time, this event has been part of a movement for year-round safe routes to school and a celebration — with record breaking participation — each October.”
