Downers Grove Hosts Recycling Extravaganza

DuPage County residents are invited to drop off recyclable items between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. Saturday at the Village of Downers Grove Public Works Facility.

The Village of Downers Grove and the Downers Grove Park District will host a Recycling Extravaganza on Saturday for all DuPage County residents.

The Recycling Extravaganza will run from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Village of Downers Grove Public Works Facility, 5101 Walnut Avenue. The event is open to residents of DuPage County, and does not include businesses or not-for-profit organizations.

Vehicles must enter the Recycling Extravaganza site from Curtiss Street, via northbound Walnut Avenue or Belmont Road. Access from eastbound Curtiss Street and southbound Walnut Avenue will be restricted. Volunteers will direct traffic in the lot and assist customers dropping off their donations.

All vehicles must be in line by 1 p.m to be served. Vehicles arriving after 1 p.m. will be turned away. 

Items Accepted

  • Carpet and padding (new this year)
  • Paper shredding (limit of two brown paper grocery bags per vehicle)
  • Lead acid batteries (automotive-size battery cores—car, boat, truck, motorcycle, computer, sump pump)
  • Electronics (large and small electronics, TVs, VCRs, DVD players, cameras, computers, laptops, copiers, cords, discs, electric typewriters, fax/adding machines, hard drives, key boards, mice, monitors, PDAs, printers, scanners, small kitchen appliances, radios, speakers, stereos, telephones, zip drives, hair dryers, and more)
  • Cell phones and accessories 
  • Propane tanks
  • Scrap metals
  • Bicycles, in any condition
  • Ink cartridges
  • Clothing and textiles  
  • Furniture, in useable condition (dressers, tables, chairs, dishes and silverware)
  • Musical instruments
  • Art supplies
  • Fire extinguishers
  • Compact fluorescent light bulbs 
  • Eye glasses
  • Hearing aids
  • American flags

Items Not Accepted

  • Refrigerators and large household appliances
  • Air conditioners and dehumidifiers
  • Smoke alarms
  • Incandescent light bulbs and fluorescent tubes
  • Thermostats
  • Paint of any kind
  • Household hazardous waste such as cleaning agents, chemicals
