Downers Grove Park District Creates Closer Parking Spaces for Eco-Friendly Cars

The park district recently set aside five parking spaces at five different locations for energy-efficient vehicles.

Drivers of eco-friendly vehicles were rewarded earlier this year with better parking spots at several Downers Grove Park District facilities.

In an effort to "reward" those who are driving alternative fuel vehicles, the park district designated five parking spaces somewhat close to facility entrances for at five different locations: Lyman Woods, 901 31st St.; McCollum Park, 6801 Main St.; Recreation Center, 4500 Belmont Road; Lincoln Center, 935 Maple Ave.; and the Administrative Office, 2455 Warrenville Road.

The Downers Grove Park District isn’t the only agency taking steps to recognize eco-friendly practices. According to representatives from the School and Community Assistance for Recycling and Composting Education (SCARCE), several places locally have implemented similar trends, including the Morton Arboretum in Lisle and Hubble Middle School in Wheaton.

The park district has implemented many green initiatives into its best practices since adopting its Environmental Guidelines in 2008, according to park officials. Initiatives include the ongoing battery recycling program, the “Take It In, Take It Out” campaign and a green tip of the month on the park district website.

The district is also in its fourth year of partnership with the Village of Downers Grove to host the Recycling Extravaganza, which will be held Oct. 13 this year. To learn more about green initiatives, visit www.dgparks.org/Information/green-initiatives.htm.
