Off-Duty Deputy Involved In Fatal Shooting: Kane County Authorities
While the state's attorney offered sparse details, the sheriff told WGN the off-duty deputy interrupted a robbery in progress.
ELGIN, IL — Authorities are investigating a fatal shooting involving an off-duty Kane County sheriff’s deputy that occurred Monday in Elgin, officials said.
Elgin police received a report shortly after 4:30 p.m. of a shooting near Walnut Avenue and National Street, according to the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office, which noted that State’s Attorney Jamie Mosser met Tuesday with investigators to review evidence.
“State’s Attorney Mosser will not release any further information regarding this incident until the investigation is complete,” according to a social media post from Mosser’s office, which said the Kane County Major Crimes Task Force was handling the probe. “These investigations typically take a few months, at which time the State's Attorney will issue a full report outlining the investigation’s findings and conclusion.”

While Mosser’s office provided few details, Kane County Sheriff Ron Hain told WGN the off-duty deputy had encountered an armed robbery in progress while driving through the area. Upon witnessing one person attacking another and seeing the assailant had a gun, the deputy shot and killed the armed person, according to WGN.
