Elgin Man Sentenced For Firing Gun At Police Officers
The man was not legally allowed to possess a firearm as he was a convicted felon at the time, officials said.

ELGIN, IL — An Elgin man was sentenced to 15 years in prison after he was found guilty of firing seven shots at police officers in 2023, the Kane County State's Attorney's Office said.
Odessian T. Torres, 30, agreed to the sentence in exchange for a guilty plea to the offense of felony aggravated discharge of a firearm at police officers.
The incident occurred on Sept. 9, 2023. Assistant State's Attorney Kelly Orland shared in court that Torres fired an illegally owned firearm in the direction of on-duty Elgin police officers. He also severely damaged a stop sign, which was hit by three shots.

Torres was not legally allowed to possess the firearm, a Smith and Wesson M&P Shield 9mm handgun, since he was a convicted felon at the time, officials said.
Torres is required to serve at least 85 percent of his sentence. He was credited for the 525 days served in the Kane County jail.

"This sentence reflects the seriousness of knowingly firing a weapon at law enforcement officers, and it ensures accountability for such actions," Assistant State's Attorney Kelly Orland said in a statement. "I want to thank the Elgin Police Department for their professionalism and dedication to keeping the community safe. Their swift response and commitment to justice were critical in bringing this case to a resolution."
