Elgin Woman Breaks in, Stabs, Sets Fire, Flees: Cops

Chevaz Odio, 28, of Elgin, is charged with setting fire to a Roselle townhome after allegedly breaking in and stabbing a female occupant.

ROSELLE, IL — Bond has been set a $2 million for a woman accused of setting fire to a home in Roselle and attacking one of the residents.

Chevaz Odio, 28, of Elgin, is charged with one count of attempted murder, two counts of aggravated arson, one count of home invasion, and one count of possession of a stolen motor vehicle in connection with the incident, which reportedly took place Tuesday.

Fire crews responded to a call about the Circle Avenue blaze in Roselle around 2:30 a.m, according to a statement from the DuPage County State's Attorney's Office. It is alleged that Odio broke into the home and stabbed a female occupant multiple times before attempting to suffocate her with a plastic bag.

The victim ran to another part of the house, which is reportedly when Odio set fire to the first floor of the townhouse. Police say she fled in a stolen car that was in the home's driveway. The woman she attacked and another resident jumped from the second story window of the house to escape the blaze.

"Thankfully the injuries sustained by both victims are not life-threatening," DuPage County State's Attorney General Robert Berlin said. "This outrageous behavior will not be tolerated in DuPage County and will be met with the full force of the law."

Odio was identified as a suspect and taken into custody the same day as the alleged incident. For that, Berlin credited DuPage County Fire Investigation Task Force Commander Bill Lyons, Elmhurst Police Department Detective Dan Torza, and detectives from the Roselle Police Department.

"I would also like to thank Assistant State’s Attorney Jae Kwon for his work in preparing a strong case against this defendant," he said, in a written statement.

Odio will appear in court August 21 before Judge George Bakalis.
