Kane County Jury Convicts Man In Sex Assault Case

The 45-year-old Elgin man could now face a lengthy prison term.

ELGIN, IL — A jury has found a 45-year-old Elgin man guilty in a sex assault case.

Zanzibah T. Stewart, of the 1300 block of Fairwood Drive in Elgin, has been convicted of aggravated criminal sexual assault, criminal sexual assault and aggravated unlawful restraint, according to a news release from the Kane County State's Attorney's Office.

The charges stem from a Nov. 8, 2020, incident where Stewart used a knife to threaten a woman he knew at that time. He then sexually assaulted her, according to the news release.

He now faces a minimum of 18 years in prison and is next expected in court on March 6 for post-trial motions. He will also be required to register for life as a sex offender.

Stewart remains in custody at the Kane County Jail.
