ADDISON, IL – An Addison man is accused of firing shots at police from inside his house, hitting one officer who was wearing a Kevlar vest, after acting erratically and saying officers needed to help him find his dogs, authorities said.

The man was identified as Salvador Lozano, 45, who lives in the 200 block of East La Porte Drive, police said.

In a 911 call late Thursday morning, Lozano requested "people to come find his dogs or his people will go looking for them and the police should do their job," DuPage County prosecutors said in a news release.

After a brief visit, a responding officer left. A little while later, a neighbor called 911 to say that Lozano was acting erratically.

When police returned, Lozano threatened to "rain fire" at noon if they did not find his dog, police said.

Lozano then walked onto his driveway and deployed pepper spray at officers, with some inhaling it, police said.

Then, more officers and a police social worker showed up.

Lozano went outside carrying an unknown item and shouted at the officers, only to go inside when they approached him. He threw an unknown liquid at the officers from the item he had with him, authorities said.

Shortly after, Lozano fired six or seven shots at officers from inside his home, striking an officer in the back as he retreated, police said.

The officer, who was wearing a Kevlar vest, was taken to a local hospital and is recovering from non-life-threatening injuries, according to the news release.

Four officers returned fire, while Lozano fired shots a dozen more times over the next hour and a half, police said.

A SWAT team arrested Lozano about 3:15 p.m.

Officers said they found 50 shell casings on the home's first floor and more than 200 shell casings in the basement.

They also discovered three Glock handguns, each with an extended magazine; two drum magazines; two more extended magazines; and multiple other magazines, police said.

Lozano was charged with attempted first-degree murder, aggravated discharge of a firearm at an officer, aggravated battery to a police officer and unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon.

A DuPage County judge on Saturday ordered Lozano to stay locked up until his trial.
