Sindee Viano, a member of the Elmhurst Artists’ Guild, came up with the concept for a community art project titled 1,000 Cranes – Community Project. In April Sindee invited schools and book clubs, and various organizations to fold origami paper into cranes. Two workshops were held, one at the Elmhurst Public Library and one at the Elmhurst Art Museum. The public responded by folding over 1,650 cranes that are now an art installation at the Guilds current exhibit – Honoring Hokusai. The cranes cascade downward from 14 feet to the floor in a colorful spiral. The Elmhurst Artists’ Guild would like to thank Osio Brown Editions for sponsoring this community project.

Honoring Hokusai was an open call to art which asked local artists to create work honoring Hokusai and the Japanese culture. 61 artists responded with 99 entries. This was then juried down to 52 works that fill the Guild walls with wonderful art. On Saturday, July 12, from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm will be an opening reception that will be free and open to the public. Registration is required.

The evening will be a cultural experience at the Elmhurst Art Museum 150 S. Cottage Hill, with a sake tasting, Mikoren Japanese Dance Troupe, Japanese artifacts, food and beverages. Steve Puttrich, judge for the exhibit, will announce the awarded artists.
