Elmhurst Families Warned About These Bikes
"If your children can't ride it, don't buy it!" the city's newsletter says.
ELMHURST, IL – Like their counterparts in other towns, Elmhurst officials are hearing more and more complaints about youths recklessly riding electric bicycles and scooters.
"Some of these vehicles are not allowed on city streets. Some of the youth who are riding them are not permitted to ride them," Mayor Scott Levin said at Monday's City Council meeting.
He warned parents to become aware of the rules before they buy expensive e-bikes.

"Be a responsible parent and make sure your children know what they can and can't do," Levin said.
The mayor said he would have the council's public safety committee look into the issue at next week's meeting. Then the topic will return to the council at its next session, he said.

In its recent Front Porch newsletter, the city listed the rules for e-bikes and e-scooters. For instance, those younger than 16 are banned from riding Class 3 e-bikes, which can go up to 28 mph. And e-scooters cannot be ridden by anyone under 18.
"Compliance with these laws is not optional – it is your legal obligation and a critical step to protect young riders," the newsletter said. "If your children can't ride it, don't buy it!"
