Elmhurst Native Gets Nobel Prize In Medicine

He shares the nearly $1.2 million honor with two others.

ELMHURST, IL – An Elmhurst native on Monday was awarded the Nobel Prize in medicine.

Fred Ramsdell, an immunologist, shares the honor with Mary Brunkow and Shimon Sakaguchi.

The Nobel Prize's website lists Ramsdell as being born in December 1960 in Elmhurst. Beyond that, it is unclear how long he lived in Elmhurst or whether he attended local schools.

Ramsdell, 64, is a scientific adviser for Sonoma Biotherapeutics in San Francisco.

The three winners discovered a class of immune cells that help prevent the body from attacking its own tissues, according to the Nature scientific journal.
