Highland Avenue Bridge Improvement Named 'Project of the Year': DuPage Officials

WHEATON, IL – DuPage County’s Division of Transportation’s Highland Avenue bridge rehabilitation project was named Project of the Year by the Suburban Branch of the American Public Works Association Chicago Metro Chapter on Jan. 26. The Highland Avenue project won in the Transportation – Less Than $5 Million category.

During the project, crews replaced deteriorating bridge joints and performed concrete patching to extend the service life of the existing bridges carrying Highland Avenue over Route 56 and over Interstate 88. The project was completed in eight weeks during the summer of 2016 ahead of schedule and under budget.

“Repairing the Highland Avenue bridge was a high priority for us,” said Transportation Committee Chairman Don Puchalski. “The bridge is highly trafficked and the deck repairs were necessary in order to ensure continued safe usage and to extend its useful life. Crews were able to complete repairs in a quick and efficient manner, all while providing minimal disruptions to motorists. In the end, receiving this award is the cherry on top of a very successful construction project.”

The Highland Avenue bridge over Route 56 was built in 1987. Since its original construction, this was the first major upgrade performed to the bridge deck. Work was completed in two phases, and involved a multi-week closure of the bridge.

The project was completed with collaboration from DuPage County, the Illinois Department of Transportation, Illinois Tollway and villages of Lombard and Downers Grove.

The bridge reopened on Aug. 10, one week ahead of schedule.
