Speeds Down On Elmhurst Street: Official

Fast drivers have been a "hot-button" issue on the street for a while, the public works director said.

Alma Street, which is west of York High School, was rebuilt earlier this year. Data shows that speeds have gone down since then, an official said.

ELMHURST, IL – Speeds have dropped on a street near York High School since a construction project earlier this year, an official said this week.

The project on Alma Street, which is west of the school, included "traffic-calming" features, said Stan Balicki, the city's public works director.

"We have seen some post-construction data on that street that showed that, in fact, speeds have been reduced," Balicki told the City Council. "That was a hot-button issue for quite a while. It certainly still remains an area of importance with its proximity to the high school."

The calming features were included after a traffic study of the neighborhood.

The work covered the entire length of Alma from Elm Park to Berkley avenues.
