A 14-year-old boy sprained his ankle jumping from the second story of a west Evanston home Tuesday afternoon after a fire broke out on the first floor of the residence, according to Evanston Fire Chief Greg Klaiber.

Emergency personnel transported him to Evanston Hospital, where he was treated for the sprained ankle and smoke inhalation, and is recovering well, according to Klaiber.

Firefighters were called to the home around 4:15 p.m., where they saw heavy fire and smoke on the first floor, Klaiber said. They were quickly able to extinguish the blaze before it spread to the second story and rescued a cat and dog as well as the 14-year-old boy.
