911 Call Of Armed Man Prompts Arrest Of Parolee With Pistol: Police
Evanston city cameras corroborated the 911 caller's account of a man with a gun, according to police.

EVANSTON, IL — A call about a passenger in a car pointing a gun at another person earlier this month lead to the arrest of a parolee with an illegal gun and an active arrest warrant, according to police.
Police said someone called 911 around 4:20 on Jan. 14 to report that the passenger in a Volkswagen with Utah license plates had pointed a handgun at someone in a Toyota SUV near the intersection of Church Street and Dodge Avenue. No shots were fired in the incident.
The 911 caller reported the license plate of the Volkswagen before it fled, and nearby city-owned cameras captured footage of the incident, which corroborated the caller's account, according to police.

Detectives found the VW parked in the 1700 block of Dodge Avenue around 6:20 p.m. As detectives checked out the car, they noticed the passenger was wearing a coat similar to the gunman two hours earlier, according to a release from Evanston police. As the car started to drive away, the detectives attempted to pull it over.
"In an apparent attempt to flee, the driver accelerated but struck the vehicle parked in front of him," police said, "immobilizing the VW."

Inside the car, police found about 79 grams of cannabis and a loaded Glock 23. The driver, Stephen Adams, and passenger, Xavier Frye, both face criminal charges in connection with the incident. Neither were
Adams, 29, of the 9200 block of Hamilton Court, Des Plaines, was charged with two misdemeanor cannabis-related counts and citation of illegal transportation of an open container of alcohol by a driver.
Frye, 34, of the 1800 block of Emerson Street, Evanston, was charged with unlawful use of a weapon by a felon, a felony, as well as the misdemeanor offenses of possession of firearm and ammunition without a firearm owners identification card.
According to police, the Glock was found on the passenger side floor of the VW and only accessible to Frye at the time.
Frye was last paroled from the Illinois Department of Corrections in April 2020 following conviction for aggravated fleeing and manufacturing or delivering cannabis in 2017. He was due to have completed his sentence in April of 2024.
At a his recent bond hearing, Frye was ordered to pay $1,500 to secure his pretrial release. He is due back in court on Feb. 7 in Skokie.
