Construction Worker Killed by Falling Beam at Northwestern

A 57-year-old Indiana man died Thursday morning after a beam fell on his head and chest while he was working at a construction site on the south end of Northwestern's Evanston campus, according to police.

A 57-year-old Indiana construction worker died Thursday morning after he was hit by a falling beam at a construction site on Northwestern University’s campus, police said. 

The man was at work on the site at 70 Arts Circle Dr. around 7:15 a.m. when a crane knocked a beam off the sixth floor of the building, according to Evanston police. The beam struck him in his head and his chest, causing severe injuries.

He was transported to North Shore University Hospital, where he died, according to police.

Evanston police are investigating the death, and both the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office and the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) were notified. 

The man’s name is not being released until his family has been notified, according to police.

According to the Northwestern University website, construction of a new building for the Bienen School of Music and the School of Communications was began last summer at 70 Arts Circle Drive.
