Off-Duty Evanston Cop Fires at Armed Robbers in South Suburbs

The officer tried to stop two men who robbed a bar in East Hazel Crest at gunpoint.

An off-duty Evanston police officer got into a shootout with two gun-toting men who robbed a south suburban bar last week.

The men entered Beano’s Bar in East Hazel Crest around 9:30 p.m. Thursday, waved guns and told everyone to get onto the floor, according to a CBS Chicago report.

As they were leaving, they got into a shootout with the off-duty officer.

Evanston Cmdr. Jason Parrott said the officer, whose name has not been released, is doing fine and is expected back at work this week. “His actions should be commended,” he said.

Evanston’s Office of Professional Standards will look into the incident to make sure that the officer was justified in his use of force, Parrott said. The process is very similar to what would happen if an on-duty officer fired his or her weapon.

The robbers have not been caught. Police released surveillance video of the robbery in hopes that someone can identify them.
