Earth Day Events in Evanston 2013
A cleanup is planned at the Ladd Arboretum Saturday, April 27, followed by an Earth and Arbor Day Celebration at the Ecology Center.
Earth Day is observed on Monday, April 22, 2013, but several events are planned throughout the week in Evanston. Here’s a list of Earth Day festivities:
Recycled Painting Party for Earth Day
6:30 p.m. Monday, April 22; Creative Coworking, 922 Davis St.; $30
Bottle & Bottega invites Evanston residents to paint their own maps on recycled canvas to honor Earth Day. Artists will provide step-by-step painting instructions at this BYOB event. Ticket price includes materials, instructions, aprons and a 16” by 20” canvas to take home.
Screening and Discussion of The Island President
7 – 9 p.m. Monday, April 22; McCormick Tribune Center, 1870 Campus Dr.; free
Students for Ecological and Environmental Development screens The Island President, a documentary about the Maldives. As leader of one of the most low-lying countries in the world, President Mohamed Nasheed must face the possibility that his country could one day be submerged by rising oceans. Three Northwestern University professors lead discussion following the screening.

‘Climate Change Solutions that Work’
5:15 – 6:15 p.m. Wednesday, April 24; Technological Institute, 2145 Sheridan Rd.; free
President and Executive Director of the Environmental Law & Policy Center Howard Learner presents a talk called “Climate Change Solutions that Work for our Economy & Environment.’
Last Day of the Indoor Farmers Market
9 a.m. – 1 p.m. Saturday, April 27; Evanston Ecology Center, 2024 McCormick Blvd.; free
Pick up fresh fruits and vegetables as well as homemade sauces, soups and salsas at the indoor farmers market. This Saturday is the last day the farmers market will be held indoors before it moves to its outdoor location at the intersection of University Place and Oak Avenue. Opening day is May 4.

Ladd Arboretum Clean-up
9 a.m. – noon, Saturday, April 27; Ladd Arboretum, 2024 McCormick Blvd.; free
Evanston residents are invited to roll up their sleeves and help clean up the Ladd Arboretum, a 17-acre parcel wildlife habitat and wooded trail that runs along the North Shore Channel.
Earth Day and Arbor Day Celebration
2 – 5 p.m., Saturday, April 27; Evanston Ecology Center, 2024 McCormick Blvd.; free
This family friendly celebration includes games and crafts, information on how to reduce your environmental footprint and a tree planting demonstration in the Ladd Arboretum at 3 p.m.
