ETHS Names New Assistant Superintendent/Principal

Former associate principal of academic affairs Marcus Campbell will take over as assistant superintendent/principal at Evanston Township High School, replacing Oscar Hawthorne, who resigned to pursue another job.

The following is a release from Evanston Township High School: 

On Monday, March 18, Marcus Campbell, Associate Principal of Academic Affairs and Student Supports at ETHS, was hired as Assistant Superintendent/Principal of Evanston Township High School District 202, effective July 1, 2013. He will succeed Oscar Hawthorne, who has resigned to take on new career opportunities after four years of service at ETHS.

Superintendent Eric Witherspoon made the announcement after Monday’s school board meeting following a unanimous vote by the ETHS District 202 Board of Education. “Marcus Campbell is an extraordinary educator and instructional leader,” said Witherspoon. “He is highly respected and admired by faculty, staff and parents at ETHS. We are very fortunate that he will be serving in this position, and I look forward to the positive impact he will have.”

Campbell brings considerable experience to his new position, all earned from teaching and administrative assignments at Evanston Township High School. Campbell began his career in education teaching English at ETHS. Three of these years he served as an AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) teacher and coordinator. In 2010-11 he was promoted to Special Programs Director, where he was responsible for coordinating ETHS’s student support programs: AVID, STAE (Steps to Academic Excellence) and Project Excel. 

In 2011-12, Campbell became Director for Student Supports and Racial Equity, where he continued to oversee student support programs and was given administrative responsibility for the school’s Wildkit Academy Saturday support program. In this role he also guided the District’s racial equity work and professional development. Campbell was promoted to Associate Principal for Academic Affairs and Student Supports in 2012, where he was responsible for Title I and all student support programs, curriculum and professional development for racial equity, and other related duties.

As Assistant Superintendent/Principal, Campbell will be the chief administrator in charge of all school operations. He will be responsible for administration of the educational program, building management, pupil personnel services, and oversight of all student activities.           

Raised in Chicago, Illinois, Campbell earned his bachelor’s degree in Liberal Arts & Sciences: English with a minor in African American Studies at University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. He earned his master’s degree in Education, Social and Cultural Foundations in Education from DePaul University. He currently anticipates defending a Doctorate in Educational Leadership and Supervision in spring of 2013.
