Evanston Fire Deputy Chief Announces Retirement

Described by his colleagues as a pillar within the department, Deputy Fire Chief William Muno announced his retirement after 39 years.

EVANSTON, IL — After nearly 40 years of service at the Evanston Fire Department, Deputy Chief William Muno announced he would be retiring on Nov. 21.

Muno joined the Evanston Fire Department as a firefighter on Aug. 18, 1986, earning just $9.80 per hour. Over his career, Muno moved up to a captain and shift chief before becoming deputy chieft in 2021.

At the fire department, his colleagues knew him for his tireless work ethic and unwavering loyalty as a trusted leader. He was dedicated to his role, often working countless hours off-duty to improve department operations and enhance service delivery for the community.

“Deputy Chief Muno has been an anchor for our department,” said Evanston Fire Chief Paul Polep. “His steady presence, leadership, and commitment to excellence have shaped the Evanston Fire Department for generations. Bill devoted his career to making this department the best it can be, always prioritizing our members, our mission, and the safety of our residents. While he will be deeply missed, his impact and legacy will continue to live on in the EFD.”

A reception and walk-out ceremony will be held at the Fire Department Headquarters at 909 Lake St. on Nov 21 from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. to honor Muno and celebrate his career.
