"[Hamos] was walking in the park with his daughter. While walking in the park, [Hamros] had what appeared to be a confrontation with at least one other subject. Shortly after this confrontation, an unknown offender — armed — shot the victim, killing him," Glew said.
The unidentified shooter then fled on foot, according to police, and no description has been publicly released.
"[Hamros'] daughter was in the area, but she was not shot and she was not injured. [Hamros'] daughter did contact family members and alerted them to the shooting," he added.
In the hours following the shooting, police advised residents to remain indoors because possibly armed suspects may have been on the loose, while emphasizing they did not consider the gunman or gunmen to be an "active shooter."
"There are no suspects in custody at this time, but the investigation indicates that there is no continued danger to the public at large," Glew told the media the following day, encouraging anyone with information to contact the Evanston Police Department.
Hamros, who had been due to start a new job as a manager of a Culver's restaurant, was in the park playing Pokemon Challenge with his 6-year-old daughter shortly before he was shot, his family told WGN. Relatives told WMAQ the victim's daughter called family members via FaceTime while running from gunfire, shouting that her father had been shot.
McCormick Boulevard was closed to traffic until about 9 a.m. Friday morning. No additional details were immediately available from Evanston police Friday afternoon.
