Evanston Plan Commission Approves High-Rise Apartments at 831 Emerson

Lowering the building to 12 stories with 267 residences was approved during a Wednesday night plan commission meeting.

The Evanston Plan Commission unanimously approved an apartment rental project at 831 Emerson St., Evanston Now reports. The plan now goes to the city council.

During a Wednesday night meeting, the project developer agreed to lower the height of the building from 14 stories to 12 stories, reducing the number of units from 287 to 267, according to Evanston Now. The building developers agreed to contribute $500,000 for affordable housing and $56,000 in sponsorship funds toward Divvy bicycles in Evanston.

The development could generate more than $1 million in tax revenue to the city on a property that is currently generating just over $100,000, but local residents voiced their concerns at a meeting in November about the number of apartment buildings in the city.
