Evanston Police Upping Patrols To Catch Speeding Drivers

EVANSTON, IL — Starting this week, the Evanston Police Department will be on high-alert for speeding drivers as part of a statewide campaign.

EPD is partnering with the Illinois Department of Transportation, the Illinois State Police and more than 200 local law enforcement agencies to step up traffic safety efforts to reduce speeding, as well as other traffic violations.

"Over the past few years, we have seen an increase in careless and risky driving. No matter how safe of a driver you think you may be, speeding is dangerous," said Sergeant Jeff Faison. "Speed limits aren’t a suggestion – they are the law."

During the speed limit enforcement campaign, officers will intensify enforcement of posted speed limits. Offenders will be stopped and ticketed, especially on Ridge Avenue, Sheridan Road, Oakton Street and Main Street, police said.

Enforcement areas were determined based on where many speed-related crashes occur, EPD said.

Drivers can expect a ticket from the Evanston Police Department if they are caught speeding throughout the month of July. Fines for speeding range from $120 for 1-20 mph over the limit to potential jail times of up to $2,500 for 35 mph or more over the limit, according to Illinois Vehicle Auto Insurance.

The speed enforcement effort is part of the "Speeding Catches Up With You" campaign and is made possible by federal highway safety funds administered by IDOT.
